How It Works

It's pretty straight forward, but in case you're a complete moron, here's what to expect.

Pick up chips

At each of the five stops around the lagoon, we will have a bag of poker chips. All registered participants will blindly pick one chip at each stop and float on.

Tally Them Up

At the fifth and final stop, we'll be tallying up your chips. The scoring is simple, we simply add up the numbers on your chips. whoever has the highest number wins half the purse.

Raffle It Up

Shortly after the winner is announced, we'll be raffling off some incredible prizes with all proceeds benefitting the Marine Discovery Center.

April 3 | MDC Amphitheater

Thingy Before The Dinghy

5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The day before the derby, join the Tailer Park residents and friends for a social gathering at the Marine Discovery Center Amphitheater. This is a free event, but there will be tip jars around with all proceeds benefiting the MDC. More details to come.

Last Year's Success

Every Entry Counts

Last year, during the inaugural Dinghy Derby, we were blown away by all of the support we received by you fine fisherman. It's because of you that we were able to donate $5,005.00 to the Marine Discovery Center—helping improve a prized local waterway with an incredible group of folks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What the heck is this Dinghy Derby?

The Dinghy Derby is a Poker Run (Google it) style event put on by those crazy boys from the Tailer Trash Fly Fishing Podcast.

When is the event?

The Derby will take place on Saturday, April 4th {aka 4/4/2020}

How much does it cost?

Derby Entry is $30 bucks per person. We accept payments via Venmo

How do I pay my entry fee?

Send $30 per person via Venmo to @t2f2events - Please include the full name(s) of each participant in the memo section.

Do I have to pay to bring friends or family?

You can fill up your boat with as many folks as you want, but if they want to play, they have to pay.

Where does my money go?

This is a charity event. $15 from each entry will be donated to Marine Discovery Center for Mosquito Lagoon restoration efforts. The other half will go to the purse. Winner takes all.

I can't attend the event, but would like to donate. Is that possible?

Yes! In that case.... 100% of your contribution will go directly to the Marine Discovery Center donation. Send donations to @t2f2events.

What is happening on April 3rd?

That's what we're calling The Thingy Before the Dinghy. Sounds fun, right? Think of it as a low key Captain's meeting where everyone's a captain (qualified, of course). This event will take place on the campus of the Marine Discovery Center. Many of you have never seen this property. We think it's incredibly cool and figured this would be a great time to show it off. We're planning to have a happy hour vibe with drinks, live music, food trucks, good conversation & general merriment.
We're still in the planning phase of this event, so some details may not be accurate.

What time is the Thingy Before the Dinghy?

April 3, 2020 5pm-8pm

How much does it cost to attend the Thingy?

This event is free and open to anyone. You don't have to be a Dinghy Derby participant to attend. Having cash for food trucks and raffle tickets is probably a good idea.

Do I need to RSVP for the Thingy?

Yes, please. We REALLY need to know how many people to expect... so please RSVP via the Facebook event page. Thanks

Where is the Marine Discovery Center?

Is this a fishing tournament?

No, but we can't tell you what to do between stops. You do you.

Do I need to pre-register?

YES! YES! YES! You absolutely MUST submit your paid registration by March 22nd. NO EXCEPTIONS, don't ask.

What if I suck at poker?

No problem.... this is a game of luck. You don't even need to know how to play.

What time does the Dinghy Derby start?

7 am (there's no trophy for early birds).

Do I need a boat to participate?

Don't be silly... you only need a FRIEND with a boat to participate. The Thingy before the Dinghy is designed to include the land lovers. We can't wait to see you there.

Where is the starting point?

Stop 1 is at channel marker 7 in Oak Hill. 7-7:30 am.

What if I’m late?

Listen to me. Don’t. Be. Fucking. Late.

Where should I launch?

That's entirely up to you. Here's what you need to know... River Breeze is the closest ramp to stop 1 and CNS is closest to stop 5. Jesus take the wheel.

What happens at Stop #1?

You'll be cheerfully greeted and checked in by two of the podcast boys. Each paid participant will get to pull a colored chip from the bucket.

How many chips do I get?

One at each stop. Five total.

What do I do when I get my chip?

Admire it's color, guard it for safe keeping, and dream about it's potential value.

Where is stop 2?

Stop 2 is at the North entrance to the Pole & Troll zone 8:45-9:15 am.

What happens at stop 2?

You pull another chip from the bucket, give yourself a pat on the back, and journey on.

Where is stop 3?

Stop 3 is located at the East end of George's bar 10-10:30 am.

Do I get chips at stop 3?

Of course.... and at stops 4 and 5 too!

Where is stop 4?

Eldora House 11:15-11:45am.

What happens at stop 4?

Aside from the obvious chip selection, stop 4 will also serve as a meet and mingle spot for all participants. We will have drinks to share…. Lies to tell….. and raffle tickets to sell (bring cash). We might stay here for longer than 30 minutes.

Simmer down, restless folk…. This spot doesn’t suck.

Where is the final stop?

Stop #5 is the sandbar just West of JB's Fish Camp. The locals call it the wedding bar... it's not difficult to find. This spot is always shallow, but may not be a truly "high and dry" sandbar. A mushroom anchor is preferred over Danforth or other Medieval styles {for obvious reasons}...or you can flex on everyone with your power pole.

What time do we show up at stop 5?

Final chips are drawn at 12:30.... winner will be announced at approximately 1:15pm

What happens at stop 5?

This is the final stop. You'll draw your last chip here. This spot was stop 4 last year and it was so fun, we all hated to leave it. So this year, we made it stop 5.

Will you provide GPS coordinates for these stops?

Absolutely... the entire route is posted above. In fact, you scrolled past it to get here and read this question.

How do we win?

After you've selected your last chip, we will tally up your score based on the color of your chips. We keep the value of each color a secret until the last chip is drawn. The participant with the highest score WINS.

What if there’s a tie?

Tie Breaker: Sudden death style!

Will there be Raffle Prizes?

Raffle tickets will be sold at the Thingy.... and at Stop 5
Bring cash (or be ready to Venmo)
10 bucks gets you 10 tickets
20 bucks gets you 30 tickets

Will the raffle drawing take place at the sandbar as well?

You betcha!

Do I need to be present to win a raffle item?

What if I have a raffle item to donate?

Donations are always welcome and appreciated. We love to give shout outs to those who donate to the cause. Send a message to the crew and we will arrange to get the ball rolling.

Why don't y'all take Paypal?

We just don't... and you asking, will not change our mind.

What if it rains?

This event is rain or shine, but safety prevails.  We will use the T2F2 Instagram page to make any necessary announcements.

Where should I stay?

Good question! Oak Hill is light on lodging options... there's only a few that we would "recommend" and they're usually booked. There's a Best Western in Edgewater, a Hampton Inn and Springhill Suites in New Smyrna. The Black Dolphin Inn is a splurge, but it's incredible and the location is pretty hard to beat. There are dozens of Airbnb options. If you're a first time user of Airbnb, click this link for a discount.

What time does this event end?

Good question.... there's no set time. The raffle will start at 2 pm.... and go as quickly as possible, so plan to stick around to collect your loot. It's sure to be a fun event that you won't want to end. Can't wait to see you there!

What if I have a question that wasn't answered here?

Hardly possible, but ask away.

We Look Forward To Seeing You All On The Water!
